Shakespeare Day

School of Liberal Arts and Applied Sciences, Department of Languages, in collaboration with ‘Book Wormz’ Reading Club and ELTAI Kanchipuram Chapter organized Shakespeare Sonnet Recitation Competition to celebrate Shakespeare Day on 8 May 2023.

Dr. Sherine Joy, Head of Languages and ELTAI Kanchipuram Chapter opened the meeting with a welcome address, and accorded a warm and cordial welcome on behalf of the Management, staff and students to Dr. K.S. Antony Samy, Professor and HOD, Department of English, Loyola College, Chennai. She introduced the guest, who had devoted his time to encourage the English dept students of HITS. Dr. Sherine, informed that this event was organized in order to celebrate Shakespeare Day, which is also celebrated as English Language Day. As the Head of ELTAI Kanchipuram Chapter, she highlighted the importance reading and highlighted on the initiatives taken by ELTAI professional body chapter on India Reads Movement. She welcomed the students of Languages dept. staff and appreciated the Coordinator, Dr. Marie Evangeline, Asst. Prof. Dept of Languages for her initiatives regarding Reading Club, Book Wormz.

Following this Dr. K.S. Antony Samy, the Chief Guest delivered his talk, who emphasized on the importance of reading and gave quotes from Shakespeare works. He appreciated the students who participated in the Shakespeare Sonnet Reciting Competition, stating his own experience during his college days. Finally, he gave his valuable suggestions about how students can become poet and poetess and publish their works.

Students from B.A and M.A English participated enthusiastically and recited Shakespeare’s select sonnets. Dr. K.S. Antony Samy, Professor and HOD, Department of English, Loyola College, Chennai and Dr. Prem Shankar Pandey, Assistant Professor of English, Department of Languages, HITS, were the members in judging panel.

After the contest winners were selected, prizes were distributed.  All the participants were encouraged and certificates were distributed.

II Prize – Valluvar Aarthi – (II BA English)   
III Prize – Nila Ellya Lama – (II BA English)   
Consolation Prize – Akil Ahmed.S – (II MA English)
