Dr. K. C. G. Verghese Research & Resource Centre, popularly known as the Central Library, is a comprehensive facility located in the Founder’s Block, encompassing 65000 sq. ft. spanning across three floors. It houses an enormous collection of over 2,25,867 volumes of books, 240 national and international print journals, over 3260 CDs and DVDs. The library provides access to over 24,563 e-journals and 2,35,243 e-books, with subscriptions to renowned databases and full-text e-journals of leading scholarly publishers like Scopus, IEEE Journals. In addition, it provides access to other resources like Academic Complete E-books, SCC Online and ProQuest ABI/INFORM Global.

To make resources more accessible and user-friendly, the Central Library has introduced the remote access platform, a resource discovery and remote access solution, which enables the users to make comprehensive searches across resources. It will also enable remote access to the resources with user authentication. The mLibrary mobile application, compatible for both Android and iOS devices, offers easy access to the eLibrary, which provides students and faculty members the access to the library’s vast resources round the clock, 24/7, thereby meeting the changing needs of the academic community.

Also, the Central Library offers a comprehensive suite of services designed to support the academic and research needs for students and faculty. These services include access to Open Educational Resources (OER), an Article Alert Service, and both Current Awareness Service (CAS) and Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) to keep users informed about the latest developments in their fields.

The Central Library provides a continuous teaching and learning environment across all domains such as Engineering and Technology, Architecture, Basic and Applied Sciences, Liberal and Creative Arts, School of Health Sciences, Management, Law, and Nursing and there by serving the entire teaching, learning, and research community with both print and digital resources from national and international contributors.

With a vision is to become a leading information service provider by establishing a state-of-the-art Digital Library, the Central Library is committed to continuous staff training and offering an intellectual and physical environment that enhances learning.

The HITS Library System comprises of the Central Library and multiple departmental libraries, working in unison to provide a comprehensive support for teaching, research, and extension activities across the University. All students, faculty, and staff members of the Institute are eligible to use the library facilities upon enrolling as members.

RESERVATION POLICY

Faculty members may reserve books that are currently issued. Users can also reserve books available in the library; in such cases, library staff will retrieve the books from the stacks and place them at the circulation counter. Notification will be sent via email. Reserved items must be collected within 2 days; otherwise, the reservation stands canceled and the book will be issued to the next user in line.

REPROGRAPHY FACILITY

A charge of Rs. 2/- applies to all members for printing or photocopying articles, book chapters, and other materials.

Acquisition

What we do

  • The Acquisitions Department is responsible for acquiring materials in all formats, both physical and electronic.
  • Ordering materials from sources all over the world
  • Receiving and copy cataloging
  • Follow up as necessary to ensure that orders are fulfilled in a timely manner
  • Payment of invoices for all library materials
  • Establishing and maintaining access to electronic resources acquired.

In addition, the Acquisitions Department

  • Sets up and maintains approval plans, subscriptions and standing orders
  • Assesses sources of supply, vendor performance and associated services while seeking opportunities to further workflow efficiencies
  • Maintains the highest ethical standards and excellent customer service with our clients, vendors and service providers

Technical Section

Technical Processing Section plays a key role to function the library. It makes a bridge between the acquisition of documents to the Circulation. The Technical Processing Section of Central Library also plays a vital role to run the functioning of this library services smoothly.

Technical Processing

1. Classification of books following DDC latest edition (presently using 23rd ed.). Before consult DDC, we check our database and provide the earlier class number in case of same title if found.
2. Preparing / Update Database using LIBMAN software.
3. Generating Bar-Code using Bartender software.
4. Classify books as Technical, Management, Science and Reference etc.
5. Update database for the classified books also for Binding, Lost Books etc. Stamping and labelling barcode, spine-label.
6. Generate list of new arrival of books which includes bibliographic details including Abstract.
7. Put hardcopy of new arrivals into display board. Simultaneously those books are kept for 'New Arrival' Display. During that week we restrict those books for any issue through Libsys database.
8. New arrivals with bibliographic details are updated on website.
9. Maintain archive for all books processed and shelved. This archive can be accessed

Reference Section

The Reference Section manages approximately 12,000 reference Books, including dictionaries, encyclopedias, geographical sources, yearbooks, directories, biographical directories, and handbooks. This section provides comprehensive reference and referral services to library users, offering necessary support such as answering information requests on demand and proactively.The Reference Section also provides guidance on the use of library resources, organizes orientation programs for new students, selects effective reference tools, and systematically organizes reference materials to ensure optimal accessibility for users.

Book Stack Section

The General Stack Section, which holds issuable books collection of the library, spans over two floors with approximately 130,000 books in English, regional, and foreign languages. The stack organization follows the 23rd edition of the Dewey decimal classification for subject-wise arrangement.

Using this rich collection and internet resources, the Reference Section provides both reference and referral services to library users. It performs essential functions, including information services on demand and proactive assistance, user instruction on library usage, orientation programs for new students, selection of effective reference tools, and organization of reference materials.

Digital Library

The Digital Library has 60 Apple IMAC systems and 10 i PAD systems with Wi-Fi internet connectivity for Academics, Research Scholars, and Students can access Online Electronic Information Resources. Students are allowed to borrow laptop computers in addition to the 60 iMac systems. Students can use the library's additional 10 computers to access the OPAC and for E-Resources. A good place for users to begin their search for E- books and E- Journals through website is to download at no cost.

Circulation Section

Guide Lines for Circulations

  • Students and staff members are eligible to borrow books from the library.
  • Borrowers must present their ID cards at the time of borrowing.
  • Students/Research Scholars may borrow regular books for 14 days.
  • Staff members may borrow regular books for 30 days.
  • Reference books and journals may also be borrowed as per library policy.
  • Reservations for library materials can be made via the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC).
  • Borrowers should inspect books for damage before borrowing and report any issues to the library staff.
  • The borrower is fully responsible for all items issued on their account.
  • Any loss of borrowed books or journals must be reported to the librarian immediately.
  • All borrowed materials must be returned on or before the due date.
  • Overdue returns will incur a charge as per library rules.
  • The library reserves the right to recall borrowed books if they are urgently required.
  • Repeat delays in returning books may result in suspension of borrowing privileges.

RENEWAL

Books issued can be renewed unless they have been reserved by another user. To renew, borrowers must bring the books to the library for re-issue at the circulation counter.

RESERVING THE BOOKS

  • A library user can reserve a book by requesting staff at the Circulation Counter.
  • Notifications for availability of reserved books are placed on the Library notice board.

General Rules

  • Faculty/Students must enter their visit in the Electronic Gate Register compulsorily.
  • Faculty/Students must bring their Identity Cards to get their Books/Periodicals/Non-Books Circulated.
  • Silence should be observed in the library premises.
  • Books removed from the shelves for reading should be returned to its correct place. If you cannot find the right place on the shelf, kindly return the books to the counter or leave them on the reading tables after use.
  • Tearing off pages, marking in pencil or ink on the books is a serious offence.
  • If the missed book could not be returned due to out of print and non-availability status, triple of the cost of the book will be charged.
  • Students are not permitted to take tea snacks etc., inside the Library.
  • After reading, newspapers should be folded properly and kept in the designated place or at the tables.
  • Users are not allowed to take cuttings from newspapers. One can photo copy the articles that are required.
  • Library users should “SWITCH OFF” their Mobile phones. Usage of cell phone is banned inside the library.
  • The Librarian reserves the right to suspend the membership of any member found involving in unethical activities.
  • Do remember to switch off the lights and fans after use
  • All personal belongings like files, folders, personal books, books already borrowed should be kept in the property counter provided at the entrance. These should not be taken in to the library. All Personal belongings like wallet, e-gadgets etc., can be kept with yourself.
  • The arrangement of chairs in the reading rooms should not be disturbed.

Book Bank

The Library Book Bank is a dedicated service designed to support students by providing essential textbooks for the entire academic semester. The service aims to assist students providing access to the selective book titles which are essential for learning.

Key Features:

  • Textbook Lending:  Core subject textbooks are issued to students for a full semester.
  • Wide Subject Coverage: Books are available for all major courses offered by the institution.
  • Easy Renewal: Books can be renewed as per library policy, subject to demand/availability.

Eligibility & Procedure:

  • Students must be currently enrolled in the institution.
  • A Book Bank membership/registration form must be filled out during the beginning of first semester.
  • Book Issue time schedule will be intimated during the beginning of the semester.
  • Books are issued on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Students must return all book bank materials in good condition at the end of each semester.
  • A fine will be charged for the late return of books.
  • In case of damage or loss of the book, the cost of the book must be paid in HITS Accounts.

Objective:

The Book Bank service ensures equal access to learning resources for all students and promotes academic success.

Book Bank Timings

The distribution of books will take place in accordance with the Registrar's circular for the start of the odd and even semesters. The distribution will be held from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
Regular Time (Monday - Friday): 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM

Students are requested to make use of the Book Bank facility during the above timings.

Dr. K. C. G. Verghese Research & Resource Centre, popularly known as the Central Library, is a comprehensive facility located in the Founder’s Block, encompassing 65000 sq. ft. spanning across three floors. It houses an enormous collection of over 2,25,867 volumes of books, 240 national and international print journals, over 3260 CDs and DVDs. The library provides access to over 24,563 e-journals and 2,35,243 e-books, with subscriptions to renowned databases and full-text e-journals of leading scholarly publishers like Scopus, IEEE Journals. In addition, it provides access to other resources like Academic Complete E-books, SCC Online and ProQuest ABI/INFORM Global.

To make resources more accessible and user-friendly, the Central Library has introduced the remote access platform, a resource discovery and remote access solution, which enables the users to make comprehensive searches across resources. It will also enable remote access to the resources with user authentication. The mLibrary mobile application, compatible for both Android and iOS devices, offers easy access to the eLibrary, which provides students and faculty members the access to the library’s vast resources round the clock, 24/7, thereby meeting the changing needs of the academic community.

Also, the Central Library offers a comprehensive suite of services designed to support the academic and research needs for students and faculty. These services include access to Open Educational Resources (OER), an Article Alert Service, and both Current Awareness Service (CAS) and Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) to keep users informed about the latest developments in their fields.

Notification will be sent via email. Reserved items must be collected within 2 days; otherwise, the reservation stands canceled and the book will be issued to the next user in line.

REPROGRAPHY FACILITY

A charge of Rs. 2/- applies to all members for printing or photocopying articles, book chapters, and other materials.

What we do

  • The Acquisitions Department is responsible for acquiring materials in all formats, both physical and electronic.
  • Ordering materials from sources all over the world
  • Receiving and copy cataloging
  • Follow up as necessary to ensure that orders are fulfilled in a timely manner
  • Payment of invoices for all library materials
  • Establishing and maintaining access to electronic resources acquired.

  • Sets up and maintains approval plans, subscriptions and standing orders
  • Assesses sources of supply, vendor performance and associated services while seeking opportunities to further workflow efficiencies

Technical Section

Technical Processing Section plays a key role to function the library. It makes a bridge between the acquisition of documents to the Circulation. The Technical Processing Section of Central Library also plays a vital role to run the functioning of this library services smoothly.

Technical Processing

1. Classification of books following DDC latest edition (presently using 23rd ed.). Before consult DDC, we check our database and provide the earlier class number in case of same title if found.
2. Preparing / Update Database using LIBMAN software.
3. Generating Bar-Code using Bartender software.
4. Classify books as Technical, Management, Science and Reference etc.
5. Update database for the classified books also for Binding, Lost Books etc. Stamping and labelling barcode, spine-label.
6. Generate list of new arrival of books which includes bibliographic details including Abstract.
7. Put hardcopy of new arrivals into display board. Simultaneously those books are kept for 'New Arrival' Display. During that week we restrict those books for any issue through Libsys database.
8. New arrivals with bibliographic details are updated on website.
9. Maintain archive for all books processed and shelved. This archive can be accessed

The Reference Section manages approximately 12,000 reference Books, including dictionaries, encyclopedias, geographical sources, yearbooks, directories, biographical directories, and handbooks. This section provides comprehensive reference and referral services to library users, offering necessary support such as answering information requests on demand and proactively.The Reference Section also provides guidance on the use of library resources, organizes orientation programs for new students, selects effective reference tools, and systematically organizes reference materials to ensure optimal accessibility for users.

Book Stack Section

The General Stack Section, which holds issuable books collection of the library, spans over two floors with approximately 130,000 books in English, regional, and foreign languages. The stack organization follows the 23rd edition of the Dewey decimal classification for subject-wise arrangement.

Using this rich collection and internet resources, the Reference Section provides both reference and referral services to library users. It performs essential functions, including information services on demand and proactive assistance, user instruction on library usage, orientation programs for new students, selection of effective reference tools, and organization of reference materials.

Digital Library

The Digital Library has 60 Apple IMAC systems and 10 i PAD systems with Wi-Fi internet connectivity for Academics, Research Scholars, and Students can access Online Electronic Information Resources. Students are allowed to borrow laptop computers in addition to the 60 iMac systems. Students can use the library's additional 10 computers to access the OPAC and for E-Resources. A good place for users to begin their search for E- books and E- Journals through website is to download at no cost.

Circulation Section

Guide Lines for Circulations

  • Students and staff members are eligible to borrow books from the library.
  • Borrowers must present their ID cards at the time of borrowing.
  • Students/Research Scholars may borrow regular books for 14 days.
  • Staff members may borrow regular books for 30 days.
  • Reference books and journals may also be borrowed as per library policy.
  • Reservations for library materials can be made via the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC).
  • Borrowers should inspect books for damage before borrowing and report any issues to the library staff.
  • The borrower is fully responsible for all items issued on their account.
  • Any loss of borrowed books or journals must be reported to the librarian immediately.
  • All borrowed materials must be returned on or before the due date.
  • Overdue returns will incur a charge as per library rules.
  • The library reserves the right to recall borrowed books if they are urgently required.
  • Repeat delays in returning books may result in suspension of borrowing privileges.

RENEWAL

Books issued can be renewed unless they have been reserved by another user. To renew, borrowers must bring the books to the library for re-issue at the circulation counter.

RESERVING THE BOOKS

  • A library user can reserve a book by requesting staff at the Circulation Counter.
  • Notifications for availability of reserved books are placed on the Library notice board.

General Rules

  • Faculty/Students must enter their visit in the Electronic Gate Register compulsorily.
  • Faculty/Students must bring their Identity Cards to get their Books/Periodicals/Non-Books Circulated.
  • Silence should be observed in the library premises.
  • Books removed from the shelves for reading should be returned to its correct place. If you cannot find the right place on the shelf, kindly return the books to the counter or leave them on the reading tables after use.
  • Tearing off pages, marking in pencil or ink on the books is a serious offence.
  • If the missed book could not be returned due to out of print and non-availability status, triple of the cost of the book will be charged.
  • Students are not permitted to take tea snacks etc., inside the Library.
  • After reading, newspapers should be folded properly and kept in the designated place or at the tables.
  • Users are not allowed to take cuttings from newspapers. One can photo copy the articles that are required.
  • Library users should “SWITCH OFF” their Mobile phones. Usage of cell phone is banned inside the library.
  • The Librarian reserves the right to suspend the membership of any member found involving in unethical activities.
  • Do remember to switch off the lights and fans after use
  • All personal belongings like files, folders, personal books, books already borrowed should be kept in the property counter provided at the entrance. These should not be taken in to the library. All Personal belongings like wallet, e-gadgets etc., can be kept with yourself.
  • The arrangement of chairs in the reading rooms should not be disturbed.

Book Bank

The Library Book Bank is a dedicated service designed to support students by providing essential textbooks for the entire academic semester. The service aims to assist students providing access to the selective book titles which are essential for learning.

Key Features:

  • Textbook Lending:  Core subject textbooks are issued to students for a full semester.
  • Wide Subject Coverage: Books are available for all major courses offered by the institution.
  • Easy Renewal: Books can be renewed as per library policy, subject to demand/availability.

Eligibility & Procedure:

  • Students must be currently enrolled in the institution.
  • A Book Bank membership/registration form must be filled out during the beginning of first semester.
  • Book Issue time schedule will be intimated during the beginning of the semester.
  • Books are issued on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Students must return all book bank materials in good condition at the end of each semester.
  • A fine will be charged for the late return of books.
  • In case of damage or loss of the book, the cost of the book must be paid in HITS Accounts.

Objective:

The Book Bank service ensures equal access to learning resources for all students and promotes academic success.

Book Bank Timings

The distribution of books will take place in accordance with the Registrar's circular for the start of the odd and even semesters. The distribution will be held from 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
Regular Time (Monday - Friday): 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM

Students are requested to make use of the Book Bank facility during the above timings.
