Pongal, the festival of harvest was celebrated on 14 January 2023. The Chief Guest for the celebration was Thiru. S. S. Balaji, MLA of the Thiruporur Constituency and the Guest of Honor was Dr. Sharmila Balaji, General Physician, Actress and Social Activist.
Thiru. S. S. Balaji emphasized the importance of agriculture and the efforts by the Government to enhance it. He appreciated HITS for celebrating the thanksgiving festival of farmers. He urged the students to consider farming as a profession. The Guest of Honor, Dr. Sharmila, briefed the efforts and hardwork of farmers in bringing food to the dining table and said that they should not be neglected.
Dr. Pon Ramalingam, Registrar delivered the welcome address and Dr. S. N Sridhara, Vice Chancellor, presided over the function. The other dignitaries to grace the occasion were Dr. Angelina Geetha, Dean (E&T) and Ms. Beena James, Head of Student Affairs. The staff and students participated in the celebration fervently. The vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Hari Krishnan P. M. NSS Secretary, Hindustan Student Council.
The celebration commenced with the cooking of pongal dish and followed by the construction of a special makeshift hut and creation of rangoli designs. Traditional folk dances such as, Thappattam, Karakattam, Oyilattam and Maadattam were performed by Damuru, the Band. Sweet pongal and sugarcanes were distributed to staff and students who also enjoyed the traditionally decorated bullock cart ride inside the campus. Traditional games like Uriyadi, tug of war, musical chair, filling the bottle with water, target throw, slow cycle race and many more brought alive the spirit of Pongal.
