Department of Sociology

The Master’s degree in Social Work at HITS is dedicated to exploring the complexities of modern social life by applying advanced social work theories and methods within an interdisciplinary framework. Building upon the traditions of the discipline, students gain critical societal knowledge and research skills through rigorous training.

The MSW course’s research areas cover a wide range of public concerns, including the effects of economic development on society and culture, challenges faced by weaker sections, gender and society, disaster management, environmental issues, social movements, and minority studies. About the Department 

Established in 2019-20, the Department of Sociology at HITS is committed to exploring the complexities of modern social life through advanced sociological theories and interdisciplinary methods. In the MSW degree, students develop critical reading and theoretical insights focusing on foundational and structural issues of society.

In 2024-25, the department expanded its academic offerings with the launch of the Master of Social Work (MSW) program, featuring specializations in Developmental Social Work and Clinical Social Work.

Among the MSW colleges in Chennai, HITS supports both MSW and Doctoral Research in Sociology and Social Work, emphasizing interdisciplinary study and practical experience. The MSW program at HITS offers two key specializations to cater to diverse interests and career goals:

2. Clinical Social Work:  Emphasizes therapeutic practices and mental health support, preparing students for careers in counselling, therapy, and clinical settings.

Eligibility

For those interested in joining, the MSW degree at HITS, the MSW eligibility criteria are a minimum of 50% pass in any undergraduate degree required from a recognized university. The MSW entrance exam assesses the readiness of prospective students.

The MSW course fees are to be paid once, the admission is confirmed. Upon completion, HITS offers MSW certification validating the skills and knowledge acquired throughout the course.
