Free Job Oriented Training on “Installation of Solar Water Pump”
US INDIA Partnership Free Job Oriented Training on “Installation of Solar Water Pump” was conducted by HITS between 28 July and 4 August 2021 under the Grant support of 11,360 $ from University of Nebraska, USA through Alamo Colleges District, USA. The objective of the training programme was to deliver workforce training to the HITS adopted village residents to build skills that will result in their employment and improved economic conditions. Initially, Alamo Colleges District provided a 60-hour “train-the-trainer” video instruction on “Installation Solar Water Pumping Systems” to the faculty of HITS.

Dr. S. N. Sridhara, Vice Chancellor, HITS inaugurated the training on “Installation of Solar Water Pump” and delivered the presidential address. Dr. G. Ilavazhagan, Director International Affairs, HITS welcomed the gathering and highlighted the importance of the training and provided an insight about various solar subsidy schemes which can be availed from the Government of India. Dr. G. Muthukumaran, Professor, EEE, HITS briefed about the various session topics to be delivered in the training programme. Dr. Sheeba Chander, Programme Coordinator & Dean SPADE, HITS proposed the vote of thanks.
Day 1 – 28 July 2021
Session 1 & 2
Dr. G. Muthukumaran delivered a session on “Solar Water Pump System Types and Configurations” and highlighted the various types of pumps and its applicability to solar applications.
Session 3 & 4
Dr. Mahiban Lindsay handled the session on “Solar Irradiation” and emphasized the importance of Solar Array Orientation and Tilt. The trainees positioned the solar panels in various tilt angles and analyzed the solar panel output voltage.Day 2 – 29 July 2021.

Lab 1: Hands on Lab exercises on understanding basic configurations of solar array.

Lab 2: Hands on Lab exercises MPPT controllers
Dr. G. Muthukumaran conducted training on the MPPT controllers. Mr. Perumal supported the trainees to assemble and test the MPPT controllers on the Test rig fabricated exclusively for AC Solar Pump installation.

Lab 3: Hands on Lab exercises on understanding basic configurations of solar pump
Mr. John Jacob explained the serial parallel connection of solar panel to configure the required voltage and current. Nine solar panels with 3600 WP was connected to run 24 V BLDC Pump & 220 V AC pump. The trainees also visited the Solar Park of 100 Kw located in the Main building of HITS.

The trainees were explained in native language with numerous examples to calculate the required parameters like
Dr. Karthik explained the methodology to calculate the Static Head- Borehole/Well Pump, selecting the size of water pipe and calculating Total Dynamic Head to run 24 V BLDC Pump & 220 V AC pump.
Day 4 & 5 – 31 July 2021 & 01 August 2021
Mr. Terence shared the Video Lecture (11 Videos) from Alamo College District, USA with the trainees and explained in native language (Tamil) about the various installation tips provided by Dr. Craig Overmiller, Alamo colleges District, USA.
Day 6 – 02 August 2021

Dr. Karthik N. portrayed the calculation of static & dynamic head with classical case studies.

Day 7 – 03 August 2021
Session 14 – 16
Dr. G. Muthukumaran, Mr. John Jacob & Mr. Perumal trained the participants to assemble the pump controller for AC & DC Pumps. Mr. John Jacob & Mr. Perumal trained the participants to connect the pump with water tube for AC & DC Pumps.Mr. Perumal educated the trainees with various maintenance tips to keep AC & DC Pumps in good working conditions.
Assessment
The trainees were assessed with questions for 30 Points. The Online Assessment Test was taken by all trainees and resulted in achieving points (Minimum marks -17 and Maximum marks -30).

Day 8 – 04 August 2021: Valedictory
Dr. Sheeba Chander on welcoming the gathering highlighted the importance of the training. Dr. G. Muthukumaran briefed about the various session topics delivered in the training programme. Mr. Aryaman Avasthi, Branch Manager (Padur), Indian Overseas Bank, Govt. of India, the Chief Guest for the valedictory function addressed about the various Government subsidy schemes available for solar pump installation in India and distributed the Certificates to the Trainees. Dr. G. Ilavazhagan proposed the vote of thanks. The valedictory function concluded with a Group Photo session.
