The Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS) welcomed the bountiful year with a profound thanksgiving to Mother Nature through the festival of harvests, Pongal ‘22. The Office of Student Affairs organised the Pongal '22 festivities colourfully in the Open-Air Theatre on 13 January 2022, with eye-catching, creative kolams, festoons, coconut leaf-stalk hut, fresh flowers, festivity, fun activities, and devotion. HITS hosted a memorable harvest festival with students and faculties from all nations and cultures. Since, almost half of India celebrates the harvest festival on the same day, it takes on greater significance for HITS which has students from almost every part of India as well as from other countries.
The festive ceremony included Directors, Dr. Ashok G. Verghese and Dr. Aby Sam; Vice Chancellor, Dr. S. N. Sridhara; Pro Vice Chancellor, Dr. R.W. Alexander Jesudasan; Registrar, Dr. Pon. Ramalingam; Deans, HODs, and our Student Chaplain. Faculty and students enthusiastically engaged in the numerous events conducted. Regardless of age, everyone was looking forward to the Pongal games. The celebrations were coloured with a feeling of camaraderie and brotherhood amongst each other, owing to the youthful colours of everyone. Tug of War, Uri Adi, Music Chair, and other fun games were organised to bring out the child in everyone, young and old.
The day was made even more remarkable by a hot, steaming, delicious Pongal prepared in mud pots and served in eco-friendly Thoongai with spoons.“Events like Pongal integrates students and builds a peaceful global order,” stated Dr. A. Prabaharan, Head of Student Affairs. Bullock cart and tractor ride were also arranged throughout the campus for faculty and staff members to enjoy the Pongal customs in the greatest way possible at HITS, capping off the wonderful day filled with happiness. Ms. Lidya Zewdu, an Ethiopian student, proposed the vote of thanks emphasising the importance of customs and cultures in the best of ways.
