School of Architecture in association with Chennai Photo Biennale (CPB) organized a Panel Discussion on “Architectural Photography” on 22 March 2019. CBP was founded by the CPB Foundation and Goethe-Institute, Chennai in 2016 as a public arts initiative in response to the growing interest in photography in India, specifically in Chennai. The CPB Foundation is a non-profit charitable trust engaged in promoting photographic art, meaningful socio-cultural discussion and educational activities. Discussion on “Architectural Photography” was a part of the various programmes conducted across the city and it was moderated by Ar. Kavitha Selvaraj, Director, C. R. N. Consultants, Chennai. The panellists included Mr. Harshan Thomson, Partner, Calm Studios, Chennai, and Mr. B. R. S. Sreenag, Architectural Photographer, Chennai.
Whilst Mr. Harshan Thomason’s presentation briefed on various techniques he developed, and challenges faced, Mr. B. R. S. Sreenag's briefed more on financial aspects of architectural photography and the vast difference that exists in the architectural practices. Presentations were followed by panel discussion during which a wide range of topics such as the scope of architectural photography in India and technical aspects, opportunities and challenges, deliberations on the use of software to enhance photographs, current schools of thought regarding the isolation of buildings form their environments verses that which calls for their inclusion, and relation between the architect as a designer and photographer. Over 340 undergraduate and postgraduate students of the School of Architecture and 50 from various departments and colleges, 15 practising architects, and 30 faculty members participated in the programme. Mr. Ashok Verghese, Director, HITS presided over the function.
