Aiming to provide an intense training for the Non-teaching faculty on communication, a three-day Workshop on “Effective Communication Skills at Workplace” was held from1 to 3 February 2022 at the Language Lab. The event was inaugurated by Dr. R. W. Alexander Jesudasan, Pro Vice Chancellor, HITS. On the occasion, he felt that the technical advancement made the learning mode more user-friendly and persuaded the faculty to make use of the available technology to learn. He reinforced the need of communication in every process at workplace: from collection and documentation of data to the retrieval of data.
The first day of the workshop was divided into 5 sessions. The first session was conducted by Dr. Akkara Sherine, Head – Languages and Rankings who gave an overview of the workshop; and insisted on the development of skills to work as a team. She emphasized the necessity of the comprehension of language structure, tone and non-verbal nuances. Further, Sherine restated the need to exhibit the presence in social media, and wanted the faculty to learn the etiquette of texting message through WhatsApp and Emails. It was followed by a diagnostic test to identify the proficiency level of the faculty.The second session was conducted by Dr. R. Kannan. He discussed the function of Grammar in communication and introduced the parts of speech and illustrated it with proper exemplification. Ms. Beulah Catherine discussed Email-Etiquette aiming to train the faculty to write clear and professional Email. The final session was held by Dr. Marie Evangeline who made the participants to engage in skill-based activities.
The second day of the workshop started with an address by Dr. David Easow, Head - SLAAS. He enlisted the various forms of communication and restated the importance of English in effective communication. Mr. Richard Jegadeesan emphasized the idea that Grammar is not an essential component to speak in English but the fluency in English can be achieved by practising the structural pattern of sentences and generating more similar structures out of it. The next session was followed by teaching the participants on how to write report, memo, proposal and MoM by Dr. Thejas Gigy Thomas. Mr. Manikanda Boopathy made the participants undertake SWOT analysis and suggested ways to handle each segment effectively. Dr. S. Priyadarshini emphasized the significance of communication professionally through WhatsApp. She emphasized on the Etiquette and norms to be followed when using WhatsApp in a professional group. Dr. Nagaraju’s reading session made the participants to practice reading few paragraphs. The final session of the day was “Copy and Paste”, an activity conducted by Mr. Ben J. Milton.
The third day started with a training on Listening Skills. Dr. Kannan allowed the participants to listen to a video and made them discuss among themselves on the theme of the video. This session was followed by an activity “Know Yourself” conducted by Mr. Ben J. Milton. The next session was conducted by Dr. S. Priyadarshini who allowed the participants to speak about themselves and she registered her observation. The post- lunch session was an evaluation test to check the improvement of the participants. The day was brought to an end with the participants giving their feedback on the workshop.
