The 13th Convocation of Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS) was held on two days on 30 September & 1 September 2022.
30 September 2022 – Day 1
In the forenoon session of Day – 1, Dr. M. Ravichandran, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India was the Chief Guest. Shri. S. Somanath, Chairman, ISRO, Secretary, Department of Space, Government of India and Rt. Rev. Joseph Mar Barnabas Suffragan Metropolitan graced the occasion as Guest of Honour and Special Guest respectively. Similarly, in the afternoon session of Day – 1, Lord Waverley, Member of British Parliament, UK presided over the event. Dr. A. Sivathanu Pillai, Former Chief Controller (R&D), DRDO and Founder CEO & MD of BrahMos Aerospace, was the Guest of Honour. Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor, HITS and Chairperson, Hindustan Group of Institutions; Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, CEO, Hindustan Group of Institutions; Dr. S. N. Sridhara, Vice Chancellor; Dr. R.W. Alexander Jesudasan, Pro Vice Chancellor; Dr. Aby Sam, Director; Dr. Ashok G. Verghese, Director; Dr. Pon Ramalingam, Registrar; Dr. C. Kezi Selva Vijila, COE; and Members of the Board of Management, Deans, Heads of Departments and Faculty Members participated in the grand event.
During the Convocation, a total of 1852 candiates comprising UG, PG, Ph.D., and Diploma students received their degrees. 52 Rank Holders were honoured with Prizes for their meritorious performance in academics. The Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) was conferred on Shri. S. Somanath, Chairman, ISRO, Secretary, Department of Space, Government of India. Rt. Rev. Joseph Mar Barnabas Suffragan Metropolitan received the Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa). The Convocation was live-streamed in Hindustan’s YouTube Channel.
Dr. S. N. Sridhara delivered the welcome address and presented the Annual Report—the highlights of 2021-22 highlighting the Institution’s achievements in Rankings, Awards, Academics& Research Activities, Social Outreach Activities, Sports, Cultural Events, Training & Placements, in a nutshell. Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese in her Convocation address mentioned that education which is the soul of the society has been passed from generation to generation creating a pathway towards a better society. She emphasized that the youth should be well informed of the current affairs which will help them in formulating solutions towards a better world.

Dr. M. Ravichandran, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India., congratulated the students on their graduation and urged them to have a multidisciplinary approach to attract success in all aspects of life. He also said that the students must be sensitive towards the environment and find ways to utilize the natural resources judiciously. He encouraged the students to persevere against all odds and overcome all challenges fearlessly.
Shri. S. Somanath, Chairman, ISRO, Secretary, Department of Space, Government of India in his acceptance speech, thanked the Institution for conferring him with the Honoris Causa. He also congratulated the graduating students and encouraged them to stay well informed of the current affairs and possess the right knowledge in order to excel in their domains.
In his acceptance speech, Rt. Rev. Joseph Mar Barnabas Suffragan Metropolitan recorded his gratitude to HITS for conferring on him the degree of Honoris Causa. He urged the students to practice compassion. He also motivated them to have a higher goal in life.
The convocation came to a denouement with the distribution of awards and administration of pledge by the graduates. While the Rank Holders, Ph.D. Awardees, Post-Graduation, B.Arch., and B.Des. were awarded degrees in the forenoon session, the Engineering graduands of Aeronautical., Aerospace, Automobile, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Biotech, Civil and Chemical received their degrees in the afternoon session.
The Chief of the afternoon session of Day – 1 was Lord Waverly, Member of British Parliament, UK. In his address, Lord Waverly said that India is a powerhouse and will play a pivotal role in world affairs. He also pointed out the relationship between India and United Kingdom that would strengthen the trade agreement between the two nations. He told the graduands that the world needs them because there are many opportunities that are offered to them by India such as a framework that is created to establish freight and logistics with the UK. He emphasized that students should grab these opportunities and guide the world in the right direction.
Dr. Sivathanu Pillai, Former Chief Controller (R&D), DRDO and Founder CEO & MD of BrahMos Aerospace was the Guest of Honour. He recalled the contribution of Dr. K. C. G. Verghese who had visualized a great University like HITS and also recorded his appreciation for Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese who is following the foot prints of the Founder Chairman. He urged the students to establish themselves as good human beings with the greatest virtue of righteousness in heart. Through his thought-provoking words, the Father of Brahmos Aerospace encouraged the students of HITS to write a page in the history of the world through creative thinking. Dr. Pillai also said that they must be remembered for their achievements. He concluded his speech saying great aim, creativity, self-confidence, mental toughness, hard work and perseverance and love for the nation and righteous will make the youth as winners.
1 October 2022 – Day 2
Dr. Kanakasabapathi Subramanian, Senior Vice President, Product Development Ashok Leyland Ltd. was the Chief Guest for Day 2. In his speech, Dr. Subramanian said that the graduands were on a platform where they have to make a choice between a normal life and a life that thinks of changing the world. In order to lead a world- changing life, one must focus on multidisciplinary specialisation. He emphasized that the students must work on the intersection. The real world is where one exhibits talents which are different from the specialization acquired through college education. He advised the students to ask inquisitive questions that would lead to innovation. This innovation becomes the driving force for an individual as well as the nation. Finally, he wished the students to achieve a lot in life and return to HITS as a chief guest for any big event.
The convocation came to a denouement with distribution of awards and administration of pledge by the graduates. The graduands of CSE, IT & IT Cyber Security, ECE, EEE, Under-graduation (Liberal Arts), Law and Professional Diploma received their degrees on the second day.
