Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science in association with Satish Dhawan Space Center (SDSC), SHAR, ISRO organized the World Space Week from 7 – 9 October 2022 at HITS. The theme for this year’s celebration was "Space and Sustainability."
The World Space Week was inaugurated by Thiru. Anbil Mahesh Poyyamazhi, Hon’ble Minister for School Education, Government of Tamil Nadu. The Guest of Honour for the event was Dr. R Venkatraman, Asociate Director, SDSC, SHAR, ISRO. The other dignitaries to grace the occasion were, Dr. S N Sridhara, Vice Chancellor, HITS, Dr. Aby Sam, Director, HITS, Dr A Sivathanu Pillai, Former CEO & MD, Brahmos Aerospace & Professor Emeritus (Research), HITS and Dr. R Asokan, Dean, School of Aeronautical Sciences, HITS.
The chief guest Thiru Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, Hon’ble Minister for School Education, Government of Tamil Nadu in his speech congratulated HITS for joining hands together with SDSC, SHAR, ISRO for celebrating the World Space Week 2022. He also extolled the challenges and hardships endured by ISRO which has resulted in successful endeavours. He affirmed that India will become unstoppable in the field of Space Research & Exploration, The Minister urged the students to pursue their passion in the field of Space Exploration and Satellite Technology.
The Guest of Honour, Dr. R. Venkatraman, Associate Director, SDSC-SHAR addressed the audience where he professed that the core of space research and exploration lies in the quest for the unknown. In this herculean feat of Space Exploration, India has faced several challenges to produce extra-ordinary results which galvanised today’s youth to take interest in the field of Space Technology. He concluded his speech by congratulating HITS for organizing this event and motivating the students to join ISRO in the future.
A Space Expo was also held to showcase India’s role in space research. The students of HITS and ISRO exhibited their research activities on space. The event was attended by staff and students from 77 schools and 21 colleges. Various competitions such as: quiz, drawing, extempore, poster painting, live project exhibition, AeroExpo and drone competition were conducted for both school and college students. A total of 1528 students participated in these competitions. On this memorable day, HITS housed above 2000 participants from different institutions in and around Chennai.
Valedictory Function:
The valedictory function was held on 9 October 2022. The Chief Guest of the event was Dr. R Velraj, Vice Chancellor, Anna University, and the Guest of Honour was Dr. G Grahadurai, Deputy Director, SDSC, SHAR, ISRO. The other dignitaries to grace the occasion were: Dr. S N Sridhara, Vice Chancellor, HITS, Dr. Angelina Geetha, Dean(E&T) and Dr. R Asokan, Dean, School of Aeronautical Sciences.
The World Space Week at HITS received a wide coverage both on print and visual media. The event was a grand success.
