With the aim of promoting reading, writing, publishing, and teaching of poetry among students, World Poetry Day celebration was organized by Department of Languages, School of Liberal Arts and Applied Sciences on 21 March 2022. Dr. K. S. Anthony Samy, Professor & Head, Department of English, Loyola College, Chennai was the Chief Guest. Dr. Akkara Sherine, HoD - Languages, upon welcoming the audience, emphasized the importance of aesthetic sense in every human mind as it nurtures the creativity and the need for celebrating world poetry day. Dr. K. S. Antony Samy, Professor and Head, Department of English, Loyola College, spoke about the importance of poetry as it celebrates one of humanity’s most treasured forms of cultural and linguistic expression and identity. He distinguished poetry from prose and introduced poetic devices as a part. Dr. K. S. Antony Samy claimed that writing poetry is not a challenging task and delineated the nuances of poetry such as diction, sentence structure, choice of words, emotions and message (content). He insisted on the simplicity of the theme and languages and exemplified by substantiating his claim by quoting English Romantic Poets. Further, he reinstated the role of creativity in producing a work of art. He concluded his address by asserting that the poem should begin in delight and end in wisdom. Dr. David Easow, Head of SLAAS who defined poetry, appreciated the poignant art of expression and acknowledged the effort of every participant and appreciated the department for organising the Poetry Writing competition to bring out the creativity of students. The prize winners recited their composition and were acknowledged with prizes; and all participants were encouraged with certificates. Dr. Priyadarshini, Asst. Prof. proposed the vote of thanks.
