School of Liberal Arts and Applied Sciences, Department of Languages, and ELTAI Kancheepuram Chapter, hosted HITS Online Scrabble Contest and Workshop on 18 November 2022.
The event began with a welcome address by Dr. A Sherine Joy, Head, Languages & Rankings. She said that the popularity of the scrabble tournament at HITS was due to the involvement of Mr. Ranganathan, Founder of Madras Scrabble Foundation and World Scrabble Champion. She informed the HITS has hosted both offline and online scrabble contest over the years. Even during the pandemic, the Online Scrabble Contest was a grand success and students showed keen interest in the online contest.
Mr. Ranganathan, started the event by inaugurating the HITS Scrabble Club. The members of the Club will meet on every Fridays and play the game. Mr. Ben Milton, AP Languages and Dr. Lisha Fredrick will be the staff coordinators and they would ensure that the club is active at HITS. He proceeded with a detailed presentation on how to excel in the online scrabble contest. He also guided the students on using the scrabble dictionary and enrich the vocabulary. He gave tips to practice anagrams, vocabulary connected with currencies and various vocabulary that are not familiar with students. He reiterated the fact that this game indeed gives an edge over the others in use of vocabulary as professionals. It’s a game that increases the cognitive skills, vocabulary and memory training.
Three rounds of games were played within the stipulated time limit. The contestants pairing was done by the resource person. The board displayed their scores and also their positions. The winners were given prizes. Dr. David Easow, Head SLAAS, in his speech appreciated the winners and encouraged students to participate in the online game every week and ensure that the club is active. He appreciated the Chief Guest, Mr. Ranganathan for his contribution to popularise the game at HITS and also acknowledged the efforts of Dr. Sherine, HOD languages and her team who consistently conducted events to promote the enthusiasm among students.
