The Department of Languages and the Athena Literary Club of Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science(HITS), Padur, Chennair hosted the Mini Scrabble Tournament and other Literary activities, in association with ELTAI Kancheepuram Chapter, HITS and Madras Scrabble Foundation on 23rd August 2018.
Dr. Akkara Sherine, Head Languages & Rankings, HITS in her welcome address during the event extended a warm and cordial welcome to Mr. Ranganathan Chakravarthy, India’s No.2 Scrabble Champion and the Founder of the Madras Scrabble Association. He has competitively played for 20 years and has represented India in 3 World Championships. She informed that engineering students of Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science and members of ELTAI Kancheepuram Chapter should utilize this great opportunity and become an expert in the scrabble event since it gives lot of scope to improve the vocabulary and prowess in language skills. She also announced that since students have shown keen interest in the scrabble tournament a mega intercollegiate tournament would be organised in association with ELTAI chapter. She appreciated the students of Athena Literary club for their great efforts in organizing various literary events and participating in competitions with the branches becoming an eye opener for exploring various talents in literary activities.
The Chief Guest Mr. Ranganatha Chakravarthy in his speech stated “Scrabble is not a casual game but a game for people with a smart mind and an in-depth knowledge of English Language. Scrabble is a game that puts one’s mental thesaurus into play.”
During the Valedictory function prizes were distributed to the winners.
The Chief Guest, Mr. Ranganatha Chakravarthy, presented a cash prize of Rs. 2000/ to the winner of the Mini Scrabble Tournament, K. Shalini (CSE - II year) and Sachin Kamal (CSE - II year) and the runners up, D. Kumar (CSE - II year) and Godwin Louie (Mechatronics – I year) were presented certificate of excellence.
Literary Events & Competitions: Athena Literary Club, conducted various events guided by Ms. Sonu Joseph, Asst. Prof. and Ms. Athma Dharshana, AP, HITS. Athena Bohemia -(Masquerade Theatre Club) conducted an event “Lights and Action” on 21st August 2018. The winner and the runner up were Bhumika Sharma (Biotechnology - IVth year) and Mitesh Sanjay Jalan (CSE - I year) respectively. Athena Fiducia - (Debate Club) conducted an event “All for one, One for All” on 23rd August 2018. The winner and the runner up were Akhil Nair (Aerospace - I year) and Udhaya Shree (Biotechnology - I year).
Vote of Thanks was proposed by Ms. Sonu Joseph, Assistant Professor, Dept of Languages HITS. She thanked the management for giving this opportunity to conduct the event and also the Chief guest for gracing the occasion. She also appreciated the students who participated in the event , especially the newly appointed leaders of Literary club Athena for their great involvement in the event and making it a grand success.
