The department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, in association with Centre for photonics and Lidar Research (CEPLR) conducted an online webinar for final year students on 28 August 2021. The virtual webinar conducted through MS Teams received overwhelming participation from the students of department of ECE. Dr. Anand Narayana Sarma, Divecha Centre for Climate Change, IISc was the resource person for the programme. Dr. AL. Vallikannu, HOD, Electronics and Communication, welcomed Dr. Anand Narayana Sarma and extended her warm welcome to the faculty members and students from ECE Departments. Dr. K. Sunilkumar, Asst. Professor introduced the guest to the participants.
Dr. Anand introduced the necessity of high-speed wireless communication links in the future for meeting high demand data requests. He briefed that the traditional systems have limited or exhausted spectrum to meet future requirements. Ever increasing data demand eventually now drives technological migration from RF to optical fiber-based applications. Installation of optical cables requires governmental permissions often and incurs large deployment cost. In addition to this, deep-space applications with large volume of data transfer further drives technologists to explore laser communication through the free-space. Dr. Anand introduced the concept of free-space optical (FSO) communication systems, its necessity, and various atmospheric phenomena to be surpassed for achieving FSO a reality. He shared some of the results from the research conducted recently. This discussion helped students to understand the importance of light-based communication systems in the future. Some of the key takeaway points from the presentation is given below.
The webinar has concluded with a very interactive Q&A session. Dr. B. C. Kavitha, Asst. Professor, Department of ECE proposed the vote of thanks.
