The second-year students of B.Sc. Food Technology visited K V Marine Exports on 15 March 2023. This industrial visit aimed to educate the students on the methods of sea food processing. The K V Marine Exports deals with the export of processed prawns, lobsters, and fish to Canada, China, and other countries.
During this visit, students learnt the standard operating protocols to be adopted by the factory. The factory manager explained process of receiving the prawns from the farms, the methods of segregation and grading, bulk packing and value-added packing, and storage methods. He briefed the team on the deep-freezing methods adopted in prawns for export purposes. Students, also visited ice making unit and fish process waste treatment units.
From this trip, students gained industrial knowledge on fish and prawn processing technology and food waste management techniques. Also, they learned about automated packaging systems, and hygienic practices adopted in the factory. Finally, students interacted with industrial experts. The students were accompanied by Dr. Sankarganesh and Dr. Adeyeye Samuel (Food Technology Department). This industrial visit paved the way for future industrial visits, memorandums of understanding for technical problem solving, and student placement.
