HITSMUN garnered around 290 delegates from across India, underscoring its commitment to fostering diplomatic talent among students and contributing to the Model United Nations circuit. Hindustan Model United Nations(HITSMUN) was a 3-day event held from September 8 to 10, 2023. It showcased a dynamic blend of delegates, each bringing their unique enthusiasm to the table. Hindustan University hosted participants from both school and college levels, creating a vibrant mix of seasoned and budding MUNers.
HISTMUN hosted 6 distinct committees for our delegates to engage with, each offering their unique perspective on global issues. From UN Women and UNSC to UNGA DISEC, CFR, ECOSOC, and IP, our delegates had a diverse range of options to explore.
These committee sessions took place across the Beautiful Hindustan campus, in venues like Andromeda Hall, Language Labs, KS Murthy Hall, MGR Hall, and Padur Halls. Each location provided a fitting backdrop for our delegates' diplomatic deliberations.
HITSMUN's Unique Selling Point lies in the diversity of experienced and rookie delegates. Moreover, the event featured a talented Executive Board with a wealth of experience.
One cannot overlook the captivating prize pool of 150,000, serving as a thrilling incentive for delegates to excel in their debates and discussions. HITSMUN truly offered a platform that brought together the best of MUN talent.
Registrations -
The first day of HITSMUN started with the essential registration process. Delegates arrived in the morning, eager to complete their registrations and receive their delegate kits. Meanwhile, the Executive Board (EB) relaxed in their designated EB Room, recharging for the intense three days of debates and discussions ahead.
Our diligent Organizing Committee members were scattered throughout the campus, providing guidance to the delegates, assisting with registration, ensuring their comfort, preparing the venues, supporting the Executive Board members, and ensuring a smooth start to HITSMUN.
Following the registration process, the day proceeded with the Inaugural Session.
Inaugural Ceremony -
The grand opening of HITSMUN commenced with an Inaugural Ceremony, starting off in the morning at the captivating Andromeda Hall. The inauguration began with an inspiring invocation song and a heartfelt word of prayer, setting the tone for the event.
Our esteemed Pro Vice Chancellor, Dr. R. W. Alexander Jesudasan, who also serves as the Chairman of HITSMUN, graced the occasion with his presence. Joining him was Dr. S. Marcelin Pushpa, the Professor and Head of SLAAS (School of Liberal Arts & Applied Sciences), who serves as the Convener of HITSMUN. Lastly, our distinguished Chief Guest, Dr. Venkat Narayanaswamy, a Fulbright Scholar and accomplished Associate Professor at the School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, North Carolina State University, added prestige to the event.
The session was eloquently addressed by our Deputy Secretary-General, Lauxley G R Pandiyan, marking a promising start to the conference. Following which our Liaison Officers proceeded to guide the delegates and the EB to their respective committee venues.
And just like that, the diplomacy games had begun, marking the beginning of a wonderful diplomatic experience.
Committee events -
After the delegates and EB members got settled in their respective committee venues, the debates kicked off. However, since most committee proceedings were just starting, it was a perfect time for the EB and delegates to get acquainted with each other.
The EB took the opportunity to provide an informative introduction, ensuring that everyone was familiar with the proceedings. For our newer delegates, the EB offered a clear explanation of the entire process, making it easy for them to navigate and participate effectively.
Overview -
On Day 2, we took the opportunity to learn from the hiccups and valuable feedback received on Day 1. This allowed us to make necessary adjustments to better accommodate both delegates and EB members, ensuring their comfort at the Hindustan campus.
As Day 2 dawned, delegates and EB members proceeded directly to their respective venues. It proved to be a more relaxed day, and the Organizing Committee had a lighter workload compared to Day 1, as all the delegates and EB members were already settled in.
Committee events -
On Day 2, committee proceedings began in the morning, and a significant increase in participation and discussions was witnessed compared to Day 1. Delegates, now well-accommodated and familiar with the rules and procedures, delved deeper into their agendas. Day 2 was marked by intense and profound discussions as delegates engaged in spirited debates about the topics at hand. Overall, all the committees experienced intense participation and achieved productive outcomes by the end of the day.
Day 3 started with a very positive and enthusiastic note with all the delegates with their numerous resolutions on various current world issues. The sessions started with a formal conference with all the delegates expressing their views to the committee and later proceeded towards informal unmoderated caucuses. In the informal sessions the delegates drafted a paper on the resolutions and published it along with the executive board. All committee sessions concluded with the delegates reaching a consensus on the draft document. After the sessions ended, the Executive Boards (EBs) of each committee gave feedback to the delegates and received feedback from them. The EBs also offered advice based on what they observed over the three days, including tips on formats, debate styles, research, and other areas where delegates could improve in the future.
After the committees were adjourned, the Liaison Officers (LOs) of each committee guided the delegates and the Executive Board to Andromeda Hall, where the HITSMUN conference concluded with the Valedictory Ceremony.
The valedictory ceremony commenced with the blessings of the divine, accompanied by a graceful invocation song. It was followed by an encouraging welcome address by Dr. S Marcelin Pushpa, the Convener of HITSMUN and an inspiring presidential speech by Dr. R. W. Alexander Jesudasan, the Chairman of HITSMUN. The valedictory ceremony was graced by Prof. Dr N.M. Samuel, the President of the AIDS Society of Asia & the Pacific and Founder of the Concern for AIDS Research & Education Trust, who addressed the beautiful September gathering with his very informative and uplifting speech with his unmatched experience.
Dr. Sonu Joseph, the Sub-convener of HITSMUN, also expressed her gratitude for the successful execution of the event. The Committee report was presented eloquently by the Director Generals of HITSMUN, Rakshan and Jessica.
The event concluded with an award ceremony, celebrating the remarkable achievements of a significant number of outstanding delegates. Finally, Deputy Secretary General of HITSMUN, Lauxley G R Pandiyan, and Secretary General of HITSMUN, Fazil Razak, delivered concluding remarks.
The HITSMUN conference was officially declared closed with the striking of the gavel by Secretary General Fazil Razak.
The three-day conference concluded with a note of experience and expectation. We expect to embark on a new Model United Nations (MUN) journey, learning from our experiences, and embracing feedback positively, aiming to set a high standard for the next edition of MUN.
This journey has taught us that realizing a decade-long dream of hosting an MUN at Hindustan University required the dedication and hard work of not just one individual, but an entire team that supported each other throughout the various phases of its creation. From initial meetings to flawless execution, Hindustan University's first MUN came to be, and we can confidently say it won't be the last.
Hindustan University is officially part of the MUN circuit, not only organizing MUNs but also sending delegations to MUNs. With that said, "To the beginning of a decade-long dream and the outset of a journey spanning decades - This is HITSMUN, where diplomacy resonates into the realm of education."
