Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS), Chennai, proudly represents India in the
prestigious International Urban and Regional Cooperation (IURC) programme funded by the
European Union, fostering city-to-city collaboration between Chengalpattu District (Chennai, India)
and the City of Trier (Germany).
The partnership aims to advance sustainable urban development, focusing on waste-to-energy
conversion, hydrogen-based clean mobility, and zero-emission campus models. Led by Mr. Ashok
Verghese (Pro Chancellor, HITS) and Prof. Dr. Peter Koenig (Trier University of Applied Sciences), the
initiative brings together government officials, academic experts, and city administrators to
exchange innovative practices in renewable energy, waste management, and urban resilience.
The HITS delegation, including representatives from the Government of Tamil Nadu and Trier
University, participated in the IURC Annual Event in Brussels and study visit to Trier, strengthening
Indo-European ties through collaborative research and policy dialogue.
This strategic cooperation exemplifies the university’s global vision —“Think Global, Act
Global”—and reinforces HITS’s commitment to advancing sustainability, innovation, and academic
diplomacy for a greener future.
