Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS), Deemed to be University, has launched the Bachelor of Pharmacy, a four-year degree program on the approval of the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI). This specialization focuses on drug synthesis, dosage formulation, analyzing the chemical nature and preclinical testing of new drugs. The course also deals with the marketing of pharmaceutical products and patenting of new drugs.
The inauguration of the B. Pharm. program was held on 7 July 2023 at the Bay Range Campus. The Chief Guest and the Guest of honor for the event were Dr. V. Ravichandran, Director of National Institute of Pharmaceuticals Education and Research (NIPER), and Mr. Charles Jesudasan, General Manager of JOGO Health respectively. The event was presided by Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Chancellor and attended by Mr. Ashok Verghese, Pro Chancellor; Dr. S.N. Sridhara, Vice Chancellor and Dr. R.W. Alexander Jesudasan, Pro Vice Chancellor members of the management, staff, and students of HITS.
The Prof. Dr. V. Ravichandiran in his felicitation address pointed out that the pharmacy program is the need of the hour as India is the pharma hub of the world. He then highlighted India’s rich heritage and the superficial understanding of Indians on certain practices that disrupt the rise of nation in the healthcare sector. He emphasized on the need for more research on the field that focuses beyond generic medicine and improves the value of the pharmacy sector so that India becomes a technological leader in healthcare.
Mr. Charles Jesudasan the guest of honor said that the course would be beneficial to students due to the exponential growth of the healthcare sector, pharma industry and digital health. He also recorded his appreciation for the Management of HITS for launching the pharmacy program as it is the right time for India to take the lead in developing in this area.
Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese in his presidential address welcomed the first batch of Pharmacy students and briefed them on the legacy of Hindustan Group of Institutions. He then continued to explain the future of the School of Allied Health Sciences. The Chancellor then pointed out that the new program marks the beginning of a new chapter in ensuring quality patient care. He urged the students to utilize the transformative and holistic learning opportunities and the comprehensive curriculum offered at HITS. Dr. Verghese said that privilege always comes with great responsibility and so advised the students to adapt, innovate and contribute to the society. He also talked about the sustainable future of healthcare with India leading the pack with a proposed revenue growth of 50 billion dollars which is expected to reach 65 billion dollars by 2024 and 130 billion dollars by 2030. He motivated the students to redefine standards, learn beyond the classroom walls, support, and inspire one another for the betterment of healthcare in India.
Earlier, the event commenced with prayer and thamizh thai vazhthu. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. R. W. Alexander Jesudasan, Pro Vice Chancellor. Dr, S. N. Sridhara, Vice Chancellor presented an introduction of the B. Pharmacy program at HITS. The B. Pharm brochure was released by the dignitaries. The event concluded with vote of thanks proposed by Dr. P. Mohankumar, Head i/c – Physiotherapy.
