Centre for Women and Girls Welfare and Development, (CWGWD) Fempower, HITS organized a webinar on “Economic Empowerment of Women and Strategies” on 19 August 2021.Ms. Sara Sam Mathew, Second Year, B.Sc. Food Technology was the Master of Ceremony.The programme commenced with the Welcome Address by Dr. Sherine Joy, Head Languages and Rankings and Head Fempower Centre HITS. She extended a warm and cordial welcome on behalf of the Management, staff and students of Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science to the Chief Guest Ms. Jessy Mathew, International Trainer and Speaker, and Director at Al Amal Watnia, Oman, Founder Director at Jj2 Consultancy UK Ltd.; and Alumna MBA’96, HITS.
Dr. Sherine briefed about the aims of Fempower that includes economic empowerment of women and girls. She mentioned that Dr. Mrs Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor of HITS, who is an inspiration for Hindustan fraternity and an iconic personality released the Fempower during the Women’s Day Celebration during March 2020. Dr. Elizabeth emphasized, “there is a need for women to rise above all challenges and odds like inequality, gender bias and economic disparity”. Keeping in view of the Fempower aims, the Centre for Women and Girls Welfare and Development has chartered out several programmes and events that would empower women and girls.
Ms.Jessy Mathews gave an insightful presentation empowering women in all aspects:economical, social, political, fundamental & financial. Her key thoughts are highlighted. Ms. Jessy,
- Emphasized that Womenneed to reshape their own perception of how they view themselves. They have to step up as women and take the lead.
- Pointed out the common problems faced even by an educated class of women and gave relevant strategies for empowering which can be applied in practical life as well.
- Addressed on the 5 major steps for empowering called “PIPAL” (Preparing, Initiating, Participating, Approaching and Leadership) and the 5s starting with Shiksha (Education) to financial inclusion of women empowerment.
- Highlighted about the labor work force participation, gender equality with relevant statistical data and that reflected the reality of women’s plight in spite of awareness of empowering.
- Drew a comparison of rural and urban women and suggested ways to bridge the gap between them,
- Highlighted the important policies introduced by Govt of India like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, One Stop Centre Scheme, Women Helpline Scheme, UJJAWALA: a comprehensive scheme for prevention of trafficking and rescue, rehabilitation and re-integration of victims of trafficking and commercial sexual exploitationwith regard to upliftment of women and girls in our society.
- Threw light on Gender Budgeting which is a major area of focus by the Government since 2005-06.
- The event concluded with Question and Answer Session followed by the Vote of Thanks proposed by Ms.Nisha Nujumudeen, AP, Economics, HITS.
