International Women’s Day is celebrated all over the world to appreciate the achievements made by women in various fields and also to bring to the fore issues surrounding women’s rights. As an educational institution that believes in providing equal opportunities for all, Hindustan Institution of Technology and Science (HITS) takes several initiatives to promote women empowerment. One such initiative was the two-day free skill workshop on “Aari Embroidery Workshop” organised by the Department of Fashion, Design and Arts, in collaboration with the National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit of HITS on 6 & 7 March 2022.
Inaugurated by Padur Panchayat President, Ms. Thara, the event observed a participation of around 30 women from the surrounding villages. These women were trained on how to set up the embroidery frame, briefed about the tools involved (needles, threads, etc), techniques of embroidery, and other miscellaneous details. This intensive programme motivated many participants to take up the craft and incorporate it into their own local small businesses like tailoring and stitching. The workshop concluded with a distribution of certificates to the attendees by the Vice Chancellor of HITS, Dr. S.N. Sridhara.
