The School of Liberal Arts and Applied Sciences, Department of Languages organised a seminar on the "Significance of Hispanism in a Globalised World" on 2 December 2022. The lecture was delivered by His Excellency Juan Angulo, Ambassador of Chile in India. In his speech, His Excellency Juan Angulo, Ambassador of Chile to India portrayed an overview of the historical significance of Chile and the spread of the Hispanism language and culture. He also highlighted the economic status and the increase in size and growth of Chile over the years and the effects of globalisation. He said that the global impact and the spread of language plays a vital role in this globalised world. The future relationship between India and Chile was discussed. The Ambassador’s speech focussed on the aspects of employment opportunities at Chile and the significance of learning Spanish. His Excellency answered the queries raised by the students regarding the future prospects in learning Spanish. He answered that Spanish is the most spoken language across the world and the employment potential is quite high.
The event commenced with the opening prayer offered by Rev. Justin Jose, Student Chaplain, HITS. Dr. Alexander Jesudasan, Pro Vice Chancellor delivered the welcome address. Dr. S.N. Sridhara, Vice Chancellor, HITS delivered the special address. Dr Sherine Joy, Head Languages presented an overview of the foreign languages offered at HITS to the students across all disciplines. She projected the languages opted by the students that includes 6 foreign languages such as Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Mandarin, Korean and the Indian Languages such as Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. She also informed about the International Seminar on Role of International Languages in Education conducted by the Department of Languages in which the best paper award was won by Dr. Andrew Philominraj, Director in Education, Director in English Didactics, Catolica de Maule, Chile, for the paper titled "A paradigm shift in English Language Teaching and Learning: A case study on Chile". Dr Ilavazhagan, Director International Affairs, spoke about the various MoUs with international institutions and its scope. He informed that there were two significant MOUs with institutions of Chile and he informed that one was with Universidad Catoliqa de Maule,Chile. The event ended with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Dr. Pon Ramalingam, Registrar, HITS. He profusely thanked His Excellency Juan Angulo for his presence at HITS and for his presentation.
