National Book Lovers Day is celebrated to encourage the joy and fun of reading. The main objective of this day is to celebrate literature and books and encourage people to put away their smartphones and simply read.
The Department of Languages, ELTAI Kancheepuram Chapter and Book Wormz Club celebrated the Book Lovers Day on 09 August 2022. The Chief Guest of the event was Dr. K.S. Antony Samy, Professor, HOD, English, Loyola College, Chennai.
In his address, the chief guest highlighted the importance and essence of reading. His lecture was interspersed with anecdotes and exhibited excellent narrative style. Dr. Antony Samy said that reading widens one’s imagination and creativity, reduces stress and stimulates the mind. He said reading increases the confidence and added that ‘Today’s reader is tomorrow’s leader”. He even pointed out that the OTT has taken advantage over reading and has reduced the interest of reading. He ended his interesting speech by insisting the students to read President Lincoln’s speech of 272 words which he delivered in Gettysburg and Robert Frost ‘Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening’
Dr. R.W. Alexander Jesudasan, Pro Vice Chancellor in his special address provided valuable inputs about reading habits and emphasized the importance of inculcating this habit.
The welcome address was delivered by Dr. A. Sherine Joy, Head of Languages and ELTAI Kancheepuram She introduced the guest and informed that “Bookwormz reading Club” of Languages dept. was inaugurated last year to promote reading skills among students. She also added that the club has taken initiative to celebrate the National Book Lovers Day.
Ms. Supriya and Ms. Kaneshka, research scholars of Dr. Sherine Joy and Dr. R. Kannan, respectively were felicitated with awards and certificates for publishing books of poems namely:
• “Into the forbidden Paths” by Ms. Kaneshka
• “Magnitude” by Ms. Supriya Joseph
The department conducted Quiz to test the knowledge of books, authors and famous quotes and many students across all disciplines participated.
Dr. K.S. Antony Samy, Professor, HOD, English, Loyola College, Chennai and Pro Vice Chancellor of Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science, Dr. R.W. Alexander Jesudasan and Dr. David Easow, Head, SLAAS distributed prizes to the winners of the quiz and book review competitions.
Vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. H. Marie Evangeline, AP, (SG), Department of Languages, HITS. Dr. Priyadarshini, AP SG, Languages hosted the event and Mr. Ben Milton, AP, Languages coordinated the entire event.
