The 12th Convocation of Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS) was celebrated gloriously in two days on 5 & 7 March 2022. In the forenoon session of Day – 1 of the Convocation, Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan, Co-Founder, Infosys presided over as the Chief Guest; and H.E. Dr. Grace Akello, Ambassador of Uganda to India; and Mr. Priyadarshan, Indian Filmmaker graced the occasion as the Guests of Honour. Similarly, in the afternoon session of Day – 1, Dr. Peter Koenig Professor & Head, Institute for Automotive Technology,Trier University of Applied Sciences, Germany presided over as the Guest of Honour.Dr. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor, HITS and Chairperson, Hindustan Group of Institutions; Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, CEO, Hindustan Group of Institutions; Dr. S. N. Sridhara, Vice Chancellor; Dr. R.W. Alexander Jesudasan, Pro Vice Chancellor; Dr. Aby Sam, Director; Dr. Ashok G. Verghese, Director; Dr.Pon Ramalingam, Registrar; Dr. C. Kezi Selva Vijila, COE; and Members of the Board of Management, Deans&HoDs, and Faculty Members presided over the grand event.During the Convocation, a total of 2093 graduands comprising UG, PG, Ph.D., and Diploma were awarded degrees. 70 Rank Holders were honoured with Prizes for their meritorious performance in academics. Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) was conferred upon Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan; and Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) was conferred upon H.E. Dr. Grace Akello and Mr. Priyadarshan. The Convocation was live-streamed in Hindustan’s YouTube Channel and was conducted in both offline & online modes adhering to social distancing pandemic norms.
Dr. S. N. Sridhara delivered the welcome address and presented the Annual Report—the highlights of 2019-20 comprising the institutions’ achievements in Rankings, Awards, Academics& Research Activities, Social Outreach Activities, Sports, Culturals, Training & Placements,in a nutshell.Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghesein her Convocation address mentioned that “Education is an endless journey for those who want to grow in life; and a degree is just a license to aspire for perfection through continuous learning.”
Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan, in his Convocation address, wished the graduates the best on their special day. He invigorated them saying, “Life is full of twists and turns;it’s never a straight line. Leverage your strengths, friends, and people who will help you and others.” To Mr. Kris, the motto in one’s life should be, “To adapt and thrive” rather than “To adapt and survive.” He further highlighted on 3 important messages from his life: 1. “Find a Wave to Ride On” by being aware of the current trends and developments that would bring a wave of change in the coming years. 2. “India is the Best Place to Be” as the chances of it becoming the largest economy in the next 3 decades in the world is tremendous. 3. “Build Character, Courage, and Capabilities”as you move from the safe confines of this university to the big world.
H.E. Dr. Grace Akello,in her acceptance speech voiced that she feels double honoured on being conferred Doctor of Letters. H.E. Dr. Grace acknowledged the conferment of Honoris Causa and expressed, “The degree has been given to me in the most auspicious of all times of the year—the time where planet Earth celebrates the female part of humanity”.Mr. Priyadarshan upon congratulating the graduates expressed, “You can understand the world around because of youreducation. But always remember where you belong and take your path towards that. None of you will fail doing so!”
Dr. Peter beseeched the graduates to take responsibility for their life, and be an example for others by showing values and constantly finding real values in life. Further, Dr. Peter’s address centred on the 3 types of responsibilities: “1. Yourresponsibility to reflect on what you hear and read, and not accept statement of others.2. Your responsibility for the society, family, culture—you need to speak up if something is wrong, try to change the world a little around. 3. Your responsibility for your education even after graduation—developand guide others irrespective of nationality, gender, race, religion to be better—make this world a little bit better every day”. He concluded the address by welcoming the audience to visit Germany as they share a good partnership with India.
The convocation came to a denouement with distribution of awards and administration of pledge by the graduates. While graduands of Rank Holders, Ph.D. Awardees & PGwere awarded degree in the forenoon session,graduands ofAeronautical Engg., Aerospace Engg., B.Arch., &ECEreceived their degrees in the afternoon session.

Post Convocation, our esteemed guests and dignitaries were involved in planting saplings, and inaugurated the following labs.
1. WK Kellogg Food Analysis Laboratory: The Chief Guest, Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan inaugurated the WK Kellogg Food Analysis Laboratory which aims to provide practical and theoretical training on the conversion of raw agricultural produce into processed, packaged, shelf-stable food products; and also helps in the establishment, maintenance and assurance of food quality.
2. Texas Instruments Innovation Centre: Her Excellency Dr. Grace Akello inaugurated the Texas Instruments Innovation Centre (TIIC), formed in association with Edgate Technologies, so as to bridge the gap between industry experts and academia through TI engagement programme that provides hands-on experience in technologies related to Ultra-Low Power Applications, Embedded System, IoT, Robotics Labs with Brain Wave Technology, and Wireless Sensor Monitoring.
3. OKINAWA – HITS Skill Next Centre: Dr. Peter Koenig, Professor & Head, Institute for Automotive Technology, Trier University of Applied Sciences, Germany inaugurated OKINAWA – HITS Skill Next Centre aiming to make students competent in the EV market. As the automobile industry is facing shortage of talented and skilled engineers needed for the transition to electric vehicles, this centre was set up to fill that gap and gain an edge through industry ready curriculum design.
MoU with Government of Uganda
An memorandum of understanding has been signed between HITSand Government of Uganda in the fields of education, training, research, consultancy, e-governance and digital transformation. This partnership will create a platform for the Government of Uganda to utilize the services and expertise of HITS and vice versa on any project, education, training, research, consultancy, e-governance and digital transformation initiatives with a strong focus on empowering citizens of Uganda. The MoU was signed by the Ambassador of Uganda to India, H.E. Dr. Grace Akello, and the Pro Chancellor of Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science, Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese.

During the Day – 2 of the Convocation, Dr. Saravanan, President & Chief Technology Officer, Ashok Leyland Ltd., and Dr. Kamal Kishore Sharma, Fellow of IIM – A, Director General, Taxila Business School, Jaipur presided as the Guests of Honour in the forenoon and afternoon sessions respectively..
Dr. Saravanan shared his message on being privileged to be a part of this young life’s celebration and sought the graduates to “think and reflect—thank the people who have made it possible for them to be here: not just parents who sacrificed, but a school teacher who encouraged to opt for Physics or Chemistry, a friend, a faculty in college who gave a right boost, or a bank officer who aided in loan. He later highlighted the significant role of the core engineering departments for the society to thrive. Apprising on the successful CLEAR (Communicate, Lifelong Learning, Emotional Intelligence & Empathy, Awareness (Self), and Risk-taking) Framework, Dr. Saravananstated, “People who act on gut feeling are the ones who get lucky” and appealedto believe in that feeling.
Dwelling upon the infinite potential of human beings, Dr. Kamal remarked, “Let this be the day that divides the two stages of your life—thepower that you're and the power that you can be”. To Dr.Kamal, the reasons for failure are many: wrong time, wrong place, no resources, insufficient clarity, misplaced priorities, accidents, missing support of people whom you expect, external socio-economic conditions, health, and above all, the most dangerous one—pessimisticand negative mindset. But the defining behaviour is, how you deal with this failure: take it as a boon or a curse; the choice is up to you!” He also added that “one doesn't fail because of failure, but the condition to learn from it”.
The convocation came to a denouement with distribution of awards and administration of pledge by the graduates.While graduands of Automobile Engg., Mechanical Engg., Mechatronics Engg., Civil Engg., IT, EEE, BioTechnology Engg., Chemical Engg., and Professional Diploma were awarded in the forenoon session, graduands of CSE, BCA, BBA, B.Com., and B.Sc. received their degrees at the afternoon session.
