B.Tech (IT) Information Technology

The Undergraduate (UG) program of Information Technology was started in the year 1998. The department has been re-accredited by National Board of Accreditation(NBA) since 2022 for a period of three years. The Department of Information Technology of Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS) provides high quality education programs by imparting comprehensive knowledge coupled with practical exposure, which is essential for software design, development and testing in the IT industry. The Department provides ample facilities in terms of software and hardware to enable the students to learn by doing. The curriculum is designed to cater to the needs of the industrial organization. It also enables the students to apply a design thinking approach to solve social and industrial problems.

The UG program aims at deepening the knowledge and skills of the students on the basic concepts and theories including computer fundamentals, programming, database management, networking, web development, operating system and other programming principles that will equip them in their professional work involving analysis, systems implementation, operation, production and maintenance of the various applications in the field of information technology. Through courses in data acquisition, automation, and real-time systems, students develop expertise in leveraging IT solutions to optimize production processes, enhance efficiency, and ensure reliability in industrial settings.

The students are encouraged to actively carry out their projects across various areas of Information Technology and to develop their technical and research skills by attending various workshops, conferences, competitions, etc…

Our mission is to develop innovative teaching and learning pedagogies among students and infuse scientific temperament.

The department of Information Technology at Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science has a long standing tradition of excellence. The program provides a sounds foundation for student wishing to pursue a career in fields such as Cloud computing, DevOps, Networking, Data Sciences, Full Stack Development, Database Development, Software Engineering, Ethical Hacking and Quality Testing through a diverse range of theoretical skills and practical experience, which are presented in the context of real time applications. 

Information Systems have made deep knowledge into every aspect of our daily life. One needs to look around systems that they features almost everywhere. Indeed, it is practically impossible to name any software applications without information. In order to compete with other companies or just remain a step ahead of them, the developers of technical systems and innovative products must be fully aware of both the applications and the limitations of information systems used in them.

The world of information technology is rapidly growing, bringing in marvelous changes in day-to-day life that demands ever changing skill-set from the students. The department equips the students in sound foundational concepts that further enable them to adapt to changing technological needs. To expose the latest trends to the students, value-added courses, MOOC, in-house seminars, workshops, industrial visits are conducted periodically. Hitsathon, and BreakSec are organized every year by the department's Student Club members and professional society, to enhance the technical skills of the students. The Department offers a quality research training experience for its students as well as faculty. The Department also maintains its relevance to world-class research by collaborating with industry and business through local and international research networks.

The Department of Information Technology is actively working with many IT industrial institutions like NASSCOM, ACM and IEEE along with industries such as IBM, Infosys, HTC Global Services, Dlink and more. 

The Department has renowned faculties with international experience both in the industry and academics. The faculties are encouraged and well supported by the Department in performing innovative research. The faculties also engage with the industry by offering their services to solve their problems.

Honors

Honors offered by parent Department based on Industrial Requirement.

Honors in Artificial Intelligence:

The Honors program provides a comprehensive education in AI applications, focusing on machine and deep learning fundamentals. Topics covered include deep network architecture, regularization, and optimization, with exploration of convolutional, recurrent, and recursive networks. Ethical considerations, particularly in NLP, such as understanding language in context and societal implications are highlighted. The program aims to develop AI techniques for practical problems, covering data analytics, machine learning, and ethical considerations, as well as introducing computational linguistics and NLP fundamentals. Learning outcomes include the ability to solve uncertain problems using data visualization and deep neural networks, as well as addressing AI ethics and applying deep learning algorithms in NLP contexts.

Bill gates Laboratory

DCS-Switching, DCS-Wireless and DCS-Surveillance Components are available in this lab for enhancing the practical knowledge of stakeholders in the Networking Concepts subject area.

BOSS MOOL LABORATORY:

BOSS (Bharath operating system) is a GNU/linux Distribution developed by C-DAC, Chennai in order to benefit the usage of free/open-source software in india,the students and staff were given an opportunity to use the MOOL and BOSS and Developed many open-source components

HUFFMAN LABORATORY:

Collaborated with Codechef to utilize the programming platform and help programrs make it big in the world of algorithms and programming contests. We train the students to write plagiarism-less codes using this collaboration.

KERCKHOFF'S LABORATORY:

Secure Academic Alliance with Check Point Technologies offers Certificate Programs for Students. Research Projects on Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) were developed. The offensive vs Defensive lab scenario was developed.

CODERS HUB II 

CodeChef was created as a platform to help programrs make it big in the world of algorithms, and programming contests. At CodeChef we work hard to revive the geek in you by hosting a programming contest at the start of the month and another smaller programming challenge in the middle of the month. We also aim to have training sessions and discussions related to algorithms, binary search, technicalities like array size and the likes.

Code Craft – Expert Lecture and Hands-on Session on 12th January 2026

The Department of Information Technology, Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science (HITS), successfully organized an Expert Lecture and Hands-on Session titled “Code Craft” with the objective of enhancing students’ programming knowledge and providing practical exposure to industry-relevant coding practices. The event was conducted on 12-01-2026 atBillgates and Huffmans lab and witnessed active participation from students of the Department of Information Technology.

The program commenced with a warm welcome by the Master of Ceremonies, who greeted the dignitaries, faculty members, the resource person, and the students on behalf of the Department of Information Technology. The welcome address set a positive tone for the event and emphasized the importance of industry-oriented learning.

The Welcome Address was delivered by Dr. P. Ranjana, Professor and Head, Department of Information Technology. In her address, she highlighted the significance of expert lectures and hands-on sessions in bridging the gap between academic learning and industry expectations. She encouraged students to actively engage in the session and make effective use of the opportunity to enhance their technical skills.

The Chief Guest of the event, Mr. Easwar S, Team Lead, Enbott Technologies Pvt. Ltd., was formally introduced by Ms. K. Remya, Assistant Professor, Department of Information Technology. During the introduction, the resource person’s professional background, industry experience, and technical expertise were highlighted, underlining the relevance of the session to the students. 

Following the introduction, the Chief Guest delivered an insightful address and conducted an extensive hands-on session on “Code Craft.” He explained essential programming concepts and stressed the importance of consistent coding practice for skill development. He introduced the students to the CodeChef platform and demonstrated how it can be effectively used for structured learning, practice, and technical interview preparation. Through live demonstrations, he illustrated how various programming topics can be systematically covered using the platform.The resource person presented a real-world problem and helped us solve it by reducing it to a generalized form, which was very interesting. 

The session was highly interactive, with students actively participating in the hands-on activities. The resource person guided the students through practical exercises, clarified their doubts, and shared useful tips related to programming practices and interview readiness. The hands-on approach enabled students to gain real-time experience and better understanding of the concepts discussed.

An interactive discussion followed, during which students raised questions related to programming languages, coding practice strategies, and career preparation. The Chief Guest addressed the queries patiently and motivated students to develop a habit of continuous learning and problem-solving.

As a token of appreciation for his valuable contribution, a memento was presented to the Chief Guest, Mr. Easwar S, by the respected Head of the Department, Dr. P. Ranjana, in the presence of Ms. K. Remya, Assistant Professor, Department of Information Technology. This gesture expressed the department’s gratitude for the resource person’s time, effort, and knowledge sharing.

The program concluded with the Vote of Thanks delivered by Ms. NithikaSree R, III Year, Department of Information Technology. She expressed her sincere gratitude to the Chief Guest for conducting an informative and hands-on session that greatly benefited the students. She further appreciated the enthusiastic participation of the students, which contributed to the success of the program.

The event concluded on a positive note, having successfully achieved its objectives. The Code Craft session enhanced students’ understanding of programming concepts, provided practical exposure to industry-relevant tools, and motivated them to pursue structured learning and continuous skill development. Overall, the program was informative, engaging, and well received by the participants.

Code Ascend Club Inauguration Ceremony’ on 18th July 2025 

The Department of Information Technology, Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science in association with the Code Ascend Club commenced the ‘Code Ascend Club Inauguration Ceremony’ on 18th July 2025 at K.S. Moorthy Hall at Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science, Chennai. The event celebrated the official launch of the Code Ascend Club and introduced the new office bearers from HITS, marking the beginning of a dynamic year of coding initiatives and collaborative learning. MR SIDDHARTH M (Business Analyst-SCM, ACSA Technologies, Bengaluru) presided over the ceremony as the Chief Guest.

National level Hackathon competition on 30^th August and 1^st September 2019

Our IT department organized a two days national level Hackathon competition on 30^th August and 1^st September 2019. Around 360 students from different engineering colleges and universities around India participated in the competition. Mr. Amuthan, Atal Mentor for India, Mr.Ashwin, Manya the Princeton Review acted as judge and chief guest of the event and shared their knowledge

A Zonal Championship cum workshop on Cyber Security and Ethical Hacking was organized on 12^th and 13^th August 2019. 35 students participated in this event. Mr.Radhakrishnan, Founder & CEO, WhiteHat Global Solutions, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India acted as chief guest and mentor for the event
