Welcome to Dr.K.C.G.Verghese Research & Resource Centre (Central Library)

The Hindustan University Library system consists of a Central Library and Departmental Libraries which collectively support the teaching, research and extension programmes of the Institute. All students, faculty members and employees of the Institute are entitled to use the Library facilities enrolling membership.Besides, the Library has huge collection of books on Engineering, Science and Humanities through its various divisions.

STACK AREA

General stack section, holding the issuable document collection of the library is spread over two floors. About 90000 documents in English,Tamil and Hindi languages are being managed by the stack section of the library. The section follows the Dewey Decimal Classification 22nd edition for subject wise stacking of the documents.

REFERENCE SECTION

Reference section manages about 10300 reference documents including, Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, Geographical sources, Year books, Directories, Biographical Directories, Handbooks and Bibliographies. The section has compiled an index of special articles published in the Britannica Book of the Year.

MAC LAB

Digital Library has iMAC,iPad and Kindle with Internet Connectivity and also Wi-Fi for the students to access the Online Electronic Information Resources. Apart from these computers, the library has another 8 computers for the students to access OPAC.

Acquisition

What we do

  • The Acquisitions Department is responsible for acquiring materials in all formats, both physical and electronic.
  • Ordering materials from sources all over the world
  • Receiving and copy cataloging
  • Follow up as necessary to ensure that orders are fulfilled in a timely manner
  • Payment of invoices for all library materials
  • Establishing and maintaining access to electronic resources acquired.

In addition, the Acquisitions Department

  • Sets up and maintains approval plans, subscriptions and standing orders
  • Assesses sources of supply, vendor performance and associated services while seeking opportunities to further workflow efficiencies
  • Maintains the highest ethical standards and excellent customer service with our clients, vendors and service providers
Library

Technical Section

Technical Processing Section plays a key role to function the library. It makes a bridge between the acquisition of documents to the Circulation. The Technical Processing Section of Central Library also plays a vital role to run the functioning of this library services smoothly.

Technical Processing

  • Classification of books following DDC latest edition (presently using 23rd ed.). Before consult DDC, we check our database and provide the earlier class number in case of same title if found.
  • Preparing / Update Database using Libsys 6.0 software.
  • Generating Bar-Code using BAR/ONE software.
  • Classify books as Technical, Management, Science and Reference etc.
  • Update database for the classified books also for Binding, Lost Books etc. Stamping and labeling barcode, spine-label.
  • Generate list of new arrival of books which includes bibliographic details including Abstract.
  • Put hardcopy of new arrivals into display board. Simultaneously those books are kept for 'New Arrival' Display. During that week we restrict those books for any issue through Libsys database.
  • New arrivals with bibliographic details are updated on website.
  • Maintain archive for all books processed and shelved. This archive can be accessed
  • Send all books for Circulation to the users
  • Ph.D Theses Uploaded to IR

Reference Section

Reference section manages about 10300 reference documents including, Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, Geographical sources, Year books, Directories, Biographical Directories, Handbooks and Bibliographies.

Based on the above collection and using Internet, Reference section is providing reference and referral services to the library users. The section performs necessary functions to help the users including providing various information service on demand and in anticipation, providing instructions for use of library, organizing orientation programs for the new students, selection of effective reference tools, organization of reference materials.

About 1,00,000 documents in English,Tamil,Hindi and Korean languages are being managed by the stack section of the library. The section follows the Dewey Decimal Classification 23rd edition for subject wise stacking of the documents.

Based on the above collection and using Internet, Reference section is providing reference and referral services to the library users. The section performs necessary functions to help the users including providing various information service on demand and in anticipation, providing instructions for use of library, organizing orientation programs for the new students, selection of effective reference tools, organization of reference materials.

The Second floor stack holds the documents of following subjects

Printed documents of all other subjects are stacked in the 2nd floor stack of the library. The Ground Floor Reading two halls. The section follows the open access system for document access, but junior students are advised to bring the bibliographical details and classification number of the documents from the library OPAC (if they have precise requirement).

Library

Circulation Section

  • At the time of borrowing, the students are requested to show their ID cards for borrowing books.
  • Books can be borrowed by staff and students.
  • Books can be borrowed for a period of 14 days by students and 30 days by staff members.
  • Journals and Video Cassettes can be borrowed
  • Reservation of library material can be made through Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC)
  • Loss of borrowed books and journals should be reported to librarian immediately.
  • If a book which has been borrowed by a student is urgently required, the library may call back the book from the student.
  • Book must be returned on or before the due date.
  • If a book is not returned on the due date, the borrower will have to pay an overdue charges
  • Before borrowing a book, the student should make sure that the book is in good condition.
  • The borrower is fully responsible for the books borrowed in/her account.
  • The library may recall a book at any time before its due date. Overdue charges may be increased for failure to return a book when it is due or recalled.
  • The borrower shall be responsible for loss or damages caused to the library material borrowed. They shall be required to replace or pay trible the cost of such material including overdue charges.
  • Penalty will be levied for marking/scribbling the pages and tampering the barcode labels.

Renewals

  • Books issued to you can be renewed unless they are reserved by someone else. You need to bring the books to the library for getting them re-issued.
  • Renewals over the telephone, oral instructions, or written communications are not entertained.

Reserving the Documents

  • A library user can reserve a book by requesting staff at the Circulation Counter/OPAC.
  • Notifications for availability of reserved books are placed on the Library notice board.

Library

General Rules

  • Faculty/Students must enter their visit in the Electronic Gate Register compulsorily.
  • Faculty/Students must bring their Identity Cards to get their Books/Periodicals/Non-Books Circulated.
  • Silence should be observed in the library premises.
  • Books removed from the shelves for reading should be returned to its correct place. If you cannot find the right place on the shelf, kindly return the books to the counter or leave them on the reading tables after use.
  • Tearing off pages, marking in pencil or ink on the books is a serious offence.
  • If the missed book could not be returned due to out of print and non-availability status, triple of the cost of the book will be charged.
  • Students are not permitted to take tea snacks etc., inside the Library.
  • After reading, newspapers should be folded properly and kept in the designated place or at the tables.
  • Users are not allowed to take cuttings from newspapers. One can photo copy the articles that are required.
  • Library users should “SWITCH OFF” their Mobile phones. Usage of cell phone is banned inside the library.
  • The Librarian reserves the right to suspend the membership of any member found involving in unethical activities.
  • Do remember to switch off the lights and fans after use
  • All personal belongings like files, folders, personal books, books already borrowed should be kept in the property counter provided at the entrance. These should not be taken in to the library. All Personal belongings like wallet, e-gadgets etc., can be kept with yourself.
  • The arrangement of chairs in the reading rooms should not be disturbed.
