Report on the Architecture Conclave

‘Eco Architecture’ School of Architecture, Hindustan University conducted an Architecture Conclave- ‘Eco Architecture’ on 1st March 2017. The conclave served as an effective platform for sharing knowledge and experiences of the industry with academicians, practitioners and researchers. The program was honored by – Dr. Ranee Vedamuthu, Chairman, Faculty of Architecture, SAP, Anna University in the presence of Ar.W.B.Anand, Chairman, IIA, Chennai Chapter The programme took through three informative and interactive sessions handled by the following experts. 1. Ar. Sheila Sriprakash, Shilpa Architects, Chennai 2. S. Karthikeyan, Senior Counsellor, CII-IGBC 3. Ar. Dharmesh Jadeja, Dustudio, Auroville

Subject of the Architecture Conclave: Eco Architecture is architecture that seeks to minimize the negative environmental impact of buildings by efficiency and moderation in the use of materials, energy, and development space and the ecosystem at large. Sustainable design or ecological design (also referred to as green design, or sustainable architecture) is a philosophy of designing buildings to comply with the principles of social, economic and ecological sustainability. Dean (BS) Dr. Ravi Kumar Bhargava welcomed the gathering where he shared his knowledge on the need of sustainability. The programme then commenced with speech by the chief guest Dr. Ranee Vedamuthu, Chairman, Faculty of Architecture, SAP, Anna University who spoke on the prime idea behind Architecture that responds to the Environment by listing the three important criteria to be focused upon i.e. social, economic and cultural, all in response to ecology. Vice-Chancellor Dr. S. Ramachandran addressed his presidential speech on the importance of such conclaves and his inputs on Eco-Architecture. Guest of Honor Ar.W.B.Anand, Chairman, IIA, Chennai Chapter deliberated on the importance of being versatile while using building materials to attain a balance with the environment.


Technical Sessions Session 1 Ar. Sheila Sriprakash, Shilpa Architects spoke on ‘Design Today’. She elaborated on what is Architecture and how does it differ from Art. That gave a clear insight on why Eco Architecture is must. Outcome: An understanding on architecture in terms of Responsive spaces that creates an ambience that is not just responsible for the people and the environment but also has deeper insight before getting imposed on a particular precinct. Session 2 S. Karthikeyan, Senior Counsellor, CII-IGBC spoke on ‘Products, Materials & Technologies for Green Buildings‘. He gave a brief understanding on what criteria Buildings are chosen for the ratings and how an Architect can achieve it. Through lot of statistical data he made it clear that Green building rating brings together a host of sustainable practices and solutions to reduce the environmental impacts. Outcome: The demonstrative examples on recent technologies participants could get acquainted to the new transformation going across the globes in the field of Architecture and Construction Industry. Session 3 Ar. Dharmesh Jadeja, Dustudio, Auroville deliberated speech in his session on ‘Appropriate Technologies for Rural Housing in Indian Context’. It was emphasized that Indian government is coming up with an enormous range of housing schemes in the rural sector and hence there is a huge scope for the emerging architects to pursue their careers in this discipline. Outcome: The participants gained knowledge on various aspects of architecture when it comes to vernacular and traditional approaches. Economical or Affordable Housing is something that Indian government is focusing on and the participants got a deeper insight into the career prospects that this particular stream can lead them to.
