Mammoth efforts by Salvage Team HUReC4Chennai
A team of good Samaritans from Hindustan University set out on a war footing to rescue the families affected by the horrendous rain in the inundated localities at OMR, Kelambakkam, Padur, Chemmenchery, Tiruporur and adjoining 34 villages. The magnitude of the crisis was beyond imagination as the floods ravaged the adjoining villages of Chennai city. While many relief teams were reaching out to people in Chennai city, there were several villages surrounding the outskirts of Chennai, along OMR and ECR that were in dire need of help. Staff and students of Hindustan University instantly formed a rescue team Hindustan University Rescue Team 4 Chennai (HUReC4Chennai). Braving the slush, potholes and neck deep water the team reached the marooned villages and distributed food, clothes and essential materials such as candles, milk tetrapacks, baby food, diapers, sanitary napkins, clothes, bedsheets, mats, medicines, water bottles etc. The team comprising NSS , NCC, Sports students and staff has been extending help right from the first bout of rain.
Sensing the magnitude of the crisis, voluntary help was extended from alumni too. Mr. Arun Nair , ECE, Batch 2009, presently working for Tech Mahindra, Bangalore joined the HUReC team on 4th December 2015. The team brought 1 lakh ID chapattis and dosa batter for the victims and joined the HUReC4 Chennai team in distribution of relief materials. Hindustan University hostel kitchens were flooded with activities as food was prepared on a daily basis it included breakfast, lunch and dinner. HUReC4Chennai team packed and distributed food to the people of all the adjoining villages. Medical camps have been set up to prevent an epidemic after the onslaught of flood. More than 11,000 lives were touched by the HUReC4Chennai team till date.
The late Founder Chairman, Dr. KCG Verghese , of Hindustan University an educationist and a philanthropist always reached out to serve the community. His noble vision to "Make Every Man a Success and No Man A Failure" is not confined within the education portals of this institution. Serving the humanity has been the prime focus of the Management. The entire Hindustan fraternity has been motivated and trained to serve the society in such situations. The disaster management committee along with the volunteers has been contributing to the villagers needs. The salvage operations was spearheaded by Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese, Chancellor, Hindustan Group of Institutions and supported by the entire Management Dr. Anand Jacob Verghese, Pro Chancellor and Mr. Ashok Verghese Director, Hindustan University.
Recognizing the yeoman services of the Hindustan University Relief Team, there was a great demand from Cuddalore and affected areas. HUReC4Chennai team pooled in resources and materials from good hearted donors that included corporates, organizations, alumni , staff, students and well wishers .
"Our heart reaches out to the needy marooned by Nature's wrath" is the motivation behind the HUReC4Chennai team.
